Fullerene C60: what it is
A molecule of 60 carbon atoms, its discovery history and information about Full Energy products.
A molecule shaped like a football
Fullerene C60 is a molecule made of 60 carbon atoms. Its structure resembles a football. Carbon exists in several forms, such as graphite, diamond and fullerenes, which are another allotropic form of carbon.
C60 is the best-known and most studied member of the fullerene family.
How it was discovered
Fullerenes were discovered in 1985 by Harold Kroto, Robert Curl and Richard Smalley. They are named after the architect Buckminster Fuller, known for geodesic domes. In 1996 the authors were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this discovery.
Since then, fullerenes have remained a subject of scientific research in chemistry and materials science.
